Bad news for those looking forward to Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake (so, pretty much anyone who's seen one of his movies, basically), as The Northman director has now revealed that the project has hit a major bump in the road and may end up being sidelined indefinitely.
Eggers recently told Bloody Disgusting that two attempts to get the movie off the ground have failed, and it was starting to feel as if "Murnau doesn’t want me to make it."
“It just feels like it’s so hard, and I don’t know why. And I think [Werner] Herzog had the right… because of German history and German cinema history, to make it. And maybe the ghosts of Murnau and Albin Grau are telling me… stop barking up that tree. I don’t know. That doesn’t mean that that’s true. I’m just wondering.”
F.W. Murnau directed the original 1922 classic which Albin Grau produced and set-designed, while Werner Herzog helmed a rather bizarre 1979 remake.
During a subsequent appearance on Marc Maron's Podcast, Eggers confirmed that Nosferatu is "not happening right now." All we really know is that the film was set to star Anya Taylor-Joy and (possibly) Willem Dafoe, and that Harry Styles read for the role of Hutter before reportedly passing due to a scheduling conflict.
Things fell apart before pre-production could even get underway, but we're hoping Eggers and co. are able to find a way to make this happen down the line.
