Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil isn’t even in theaters yet, but the Barbarian and Weapons director is already quietly mulling over where a follow-up could head.

There was recently an early-screening of the video game film's first 30 minutes in Los Angeles, and The Playlist caught up with Cregger during a post-screening Q&A for a quick chat.

When asked about whether he'd want to immediately make a Resident Evil sequel or jump to some other film project, Cregger responded, "I can’t help thinking about other places this story could go. I’ve got ideas, but this movie hasn’t even come out yet. Let’s see what happens."

Interestingly, he also disclosed during the post-footage Q&A that while his script isn't a direct page-by-page adaptation of any specific game from the long running franchise, he drew heavily from the dread-heavy atmospheres of RE4 and Biohazard.

He also added that his movie channels the video game experience by making the audience keenly aware of certain mechanics from the game.

"You will know how many bullets are in his gun. You will care when he misses a shot," he told the audience.  Creeger also teased that there's another mechanic from the games present in the film, but he wants to keep it a secret until the movie is officially released.

From Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, in association with TriStar Pictures, Resident Evil hits theatres September 18, 2026.

From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

From Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, in association with TriStar Pictures, Resident Evil hits theatres September 18, 2026.

The cast includes Abrams (Weapons, Whalefall), Zach Cherry (Severance, Fallout), Kali Reis (True Detective, Mercy) and Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird, Richard Jewell).

This film is rated R by The Motion Picture Association for the following reasons: strong bloody violence, gore and language throughout.
