Last night, we learned that Melissa Barrera, who plays original Ghostface Billy Loomis' daughter in the new Scream movies, will not be returning for the upcoming seventh instalment in the long-running slasher franchise.

The actress was reportedly fired for sharing "anti-Semitic" comments on social media, with Spyglass Entertainment releasing a statement explaining why they decided to drop her from the film shortly after, citing "rhetoric that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."

“Spyglass stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

The backlash to this decision has been significant, with many feeling that Barrera's comments are not anti-Semitic in any way, and her supposed "Holocaust distortion" was simply taken from a series of quotes she shared from a well-known Israeli writer.

Now, Barrera has broken her silence on the situation on Instagram, although she doesn't directly respond to being fired from the film.

“First and foremost I condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people,” Barrera wrote. “As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need. Every person on this earth — regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status — deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom.

I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me.”

Earlier today, it was confirmed that Jenna Ortega has also parted ways with Scream VII, but the "official" word is that her departure has nothing to do with Barrera and is down to a scheduling conflict.

"Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter," reads Scream VI's synopsis. "In Scream VI, Melissa Barrera ("Sam Carpenter"), Jasmin Savoy Brown ("Mindy Meeks-Martin"), Mason Gooding ("Chad Meeks-Martin"), Jenna Ortega ("Tara Carpenter"), Hayden Panettiere ("Kirby Reed"), and Courtney Cox ("Gale Weathers") return to their roles in the franchise alongside Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra and Samara Weaving."

Can you get one of those so-called non-Hamas type civilians to come out against the terrorist attack? Just one? Didn't think so. Glad they canned you.

@Cryptonautaz - meh... look I'm very pro Israel. They're essentially the beacon of sanity in the. Middle East, BUT they have been pretty awful to Palestinians. I'm not saying that it doesn't stem from the constant threat of attack that they face, but Israel did not do itself any favors. That being said, it's the Middle East.

Long story short, I think it's pretty fair to say that the issue isn't black and white. The Israeli government is in an impossible position, but using the iron fist tends to upset some people. There are regularly (irregular- regularly irregular means scheduled but zoned randomly) scheduled home invasions/ raids simply to "dissuade" Hamas. The problem with randomly kicking in doors every day is that you piss off all of those people who would, otherwise, have no problem with you.

The Israeli government was put in an impossible situation, but Israel has always been known to go overkill in their responses. It's a tactic designed to dissuade further aggression, but that only works for so long on a macro scale.
