Since 20th Century Studios is now under the Disney banner, there was some concern that the upcoming Predator prequel, Prey, might tone down the rather intense violence the franchise has become known for. Fortunately, fans needn't have worried.
Director Dan Trachtenberg has already assured us that the movie wouldn't shy away from a bit of carnage candy, and his film has now officially been rated R for "strong, bloody violence."
The first trailer and follow-up TV spot certainly hinted at some gruesome sequences, but they didn't really show anything particularly bloody or graphic. Now that the rating has been confirmed, let's hope we get a red-band trailer soon.
Ratings aside, Prey is shaping up to be a unique viewing experience. During a recent interview, producer Jhane Myers confirmed that the movie will be available to watch in English and Comanche with subtitles when it debuts on the Hulu streaming service on August 5.
"That's never been done for my tribe, ever," said Myers. "There's only a couple of movies. I think 'Star Wars,' which was 30 years old when they transcribed it into Navajo, and then there was Navajo again for 'Finding Nemo,' which was 20 years old when they did that. But this is the first time for a brand new film to come out and have that option to hear it all in the whole language. So that not only inspires the young language speakers of my nation, but that inspires a lot of other people and shows them, and like I said, shows the world what our language is about. Which is thrilling for me."
Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, “Prey” is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.
Prey was written by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan, Treadstone), and produced by John Davis (Jungle Cruise, The Predator) and Jhane Myers (Monsters of God), with Lawrence Gordon (Watchmen), Marty Ewing (It: Chapter Two), James E. Thomas, John C. Thomas and Marc Toberoff (Fantasy Island) serving as executive producers.
