Sony Pictures has unveiled the first official poster for their upcoming slasher sequel, I Know What You Did Last Summer, just days ahead of their CinemaCon presentation on Monday. This eye-catching promo image teases the return of a familiar hook, stirring excitement among fans of the classic horror franchise. While the poster stops short of confirming who will be wielding the iconic weapon, it does offer a chilling reminder of the series’ legacy—a legacy that includes memorable scenes of beachside terror and tense showdowns with an unforgiving killer.

The big news for this sequel is the return of both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., reprising their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively. The pair originally starred together in 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, which quickly achieved cult-classic status for its combination of slasher elements, teenage angst, and a foreboding small-town atmosphere. They then returned for the 1998 follow-up, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, taking their characters to a tropical island vacation that turned deadly. Now, after years of rumors and speculation, the beloved protagonists are set to confront danger once more, though the specifics of the new threat remain tightly under wraps.

Given that Sony has dropped a poster so close to its CinemaCon showcase, it seems highly plausible that a first-look teaser trailer may be unveiled during their Monday night presentation. This would place I Know What You Did Last Summer among a handful of major Sony projects highlighted at the annual industry event, where studios often preview their tentpole films and surprise attendees with exclusive footage or behind-the-scenes peeks.

The supporting cast promises to blend fresh talent with seasoned performers. Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks; Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery; Boy Erased), Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies; Genera+ion; City on Fire), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid; World on Fire; A Dog’s Way Home), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta; Tell Me Lies; The Game), Sarah Pidgeon (The Wilds; Tiny Beautiful Things; One Dollar), Billy Campbell (The Rocketeer; Cardinal; Dynasty), Gabbriette Bechtel (Now Apocalypse; American Horror Story; Thirsty), Austin Nichols (The Walking Dead; One Tree Hill; Ray Donovan), Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty; Burning Questions; The Kelly Clarkson Show), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital; Crushed; Pretty Little Liars: Summer School), and of course, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt round out an impressive roster of slasher-flick survivors and potential victims.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Lansky, this latest entry in the I Know What You Did Last Summer saga aims to deliver a potent dose of horror counterprogramming when it opens this July. Its release date strategically places it between two superhero blockbusters—DC Studios’ Superman (July 11) and Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25)—giving fans of suspense and gore an enticing alternative to comic book fare. Robinson’s previous credits include Someone Great and Do Revenge, as well as co-writing duties on Thor: Love and Thunder with Taika Waititi and the Max Original Unpregnant. With legacy characters returning, a promising supporting cast, and a director known for stylish storytelling, I Know What You Did Last Summer is poised to rekindle the slasher magic that first captivated audiences over two decades ago.

I Know What You Did Last Summer hits theaters on July 18!
