The year's biggest horror breakout is officially crossing over into gaming. Obsession, the supernatural horror film from writer and director Curry Barker, is coming to Fortnite with a skin based on Nikki Freeman, the character played by Inde Navarrette. The outfit lands in the game's Item Shop today (October 21st) as part of Epic Games' Fortnitemares event.
Navarrette was even part of the announcement. In a video shared by the official Fortnite account yesterday (October 20th), she holds up the film's One Wish Willow and wishes for Nikki to be in Fortnite, before the footage glitches into the game.
From A $750,000 Indie To A $520 Million Phenomenon
Few horror films have had a run like Obsession. Barker, who built a following making horror shorts on YouTube, shot the film in Los Angeles on a reported budget of around $750,000. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, where Focus Features acquired it in a deal reported at around $15 million, and Blumhouse came on board after the sale.
When it finally hit US theaters in May, the film exploded. Obsession has grossed over $520 million worldwide, with roughly $263 million coming from North America, making it the most successful release in Focus Features history. Along the way, it set a record for the best fourth weekend hold ever for a horror film, dropping just 7 percent.
The film stars Michael Johnston as Bear, a shy music store clerk who breaks a One Wish Willow to win over his friend Nikki. The wish comes true in the worst possible way, and Navarrette's unsettling performance as the newly devoted Nikki turned the character into one of the defining horror figures of the year.
What Fortnite Players Are Getting
Epic has only officially shown the Nikki outfit itself, but dataminers have found a full Obsession set in the game files. It reportedly includes the Nikki outfit with an optional Splatter style, a One Wish Willow back bling that plays the film's sound effect on eliminations, a pickaxe called Nikki's Broken Bottle, and an emote called No No No... in which Nikki holds up a hand-lettered "Don't do THAT!" sign. The outfit's in-game description reads "Be Careful What You Wish For."
Epic first teased the crossover on Sunday (October 19th) with a post reading "Found the One Wish Willow. Oct. 21." The cosmetics are expected to go live with the Item Shop reset at 8:00 PM ET. Pricing has not been revealed, and Bear does not appear to be included.
Why Some Horror Fans Are Uneasy
Not everyone is excited. Some fans of the film have questioned whether Nikki should be sold as a cosmetic at all. In Obsession, the wish effectively strips Nikki of her own will, and the film deals heavily with possession and consent, which has led some to argue that turning her into a playable character for a game with a young audience misses the point of the story. A vocal group has gone as far as calling for a boycott.
Others see it differently. Fortnite has welcomed plenty of horror characters into the game over the years, and many fans view the collab as a celebration of a genuine horror success story, especially with Navarrette personally taking part in the reveal. For a film that started life as a small indie, landing in one of the biggest games in the world is a pretty remarkable milestone.
Part Of A Horror-Heavy Fortnitemares
Nikki arrives during a Fortnitemares season that has already leaned heavily into darker crossovers, including the recent addition of Charlie, Alastor, and Vaggie from Hazbin Hotel. With Obsession still one of the most talked-about horror films of the year, it is easy to see why Epic wanted Nikki in the game before Halloween.
Do you think Nikki Freeman is a fun addition to Fortnite's horror lineup, or should Epic have left Obsession out of the game?
