Hellraiser: Revival Is A Hit With Horror Fans, And Saber Says More Games Like It Are Coming

Pinhead is back on top. Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch revealed earlier this week that Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival "has been performing extremely well on PC and console," giving horror fans another reason to celebrate the return of the Cenobites.

Karch shared the news on LinkedIn, where he described the game as proof that a familiar horror name and a reasonable budget can go a long way.

"The game is testament to the notion that an established IP and solid AA development with controlled costs can produce great results and high user scores."

A Horror Game That Went All In

Developed by Boss Team Games, Revival follows Aidan, a young man who is dragged into the world of the Cenobites when his girlfriend Sunny gets tangled up with the Genesis Configuration. The puzzle box sends him into the Labyrinth, where he must survive the horrors that the franchise has been known for since 1987.

The developers set out to make a game that does not hold back, and that is exactly what players got. Revival is packed with brutal gore and grotesque body horror, and the team said before launch that they wanted it to feel as extreme as the original film did to audiences in the 1980s.

Doug Bradley's return as Pinhead has been one of the biggest draws. Bradley played the character in the original film and many of the sequels, and Barker has said he could not imagine anyone else in the role.

Fans Are Embracing It

Critics were split on Revival, but players have been much kinder. The game holds a Very Positive rating on Steam, with roughly 94 percent of reviews recommending it, and physical copies have proven hard to track down in some areas. Horror fans have also praised its story and its faithful approach to Barker's mythology, even if some have taken issue with the combat.

Barker has been one of the game's biggest supporters. Speaking with Dread Central last week, he said he had worried the game would be censored and was astonished by how far the team was able to push it. He also called its success a wake-up call for anyone involved in the franchise.

More Horror Could Be On The Way

Karch said Revival is only the first step for Saber. "This is the first in a series of releases by Saber that will continue to prove out our methodology."

He also argued that mid-budget games based on established properties are the smarter path forward for the industry, noting that a AA game "is less risky and can provide much greater returns on average." For horror fans, that is promising news. Plenty of classic horror franchises could benefit from the Revival treatment, and Saber's success could encourage other publishers to dig into their own catalogs.

Saber has not said whether any of its upcoming projects are horror games, but its approach of building on beloved properties at a lower cost lines up well with the genre. Horror has always thrived on smaller budgets, from the original Hellraiser to many of the most celebrated games in the genre.

A Long Road Back For Pinhead

Revival's success is a welcome change for a franchise that has had a rough couple of decades. After the original films, Hellraiser spent years in direct-to-video sequels that many fans would rather forget, and Barker recently said that a lot of those movies were made simply to hold onto the rights.

Things started to turn around when Barker regained his U.S. rights, and David Bruckner's 2022 reimagining for Hulu showed the series could still deliver. Revival builds on that momentum, and with Barker saying he has many ideas waiting in the wings, the Cenobites may not be going back into the box anytime soon.

Revival is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

Which horror franchise would you like to see get the Hellraiser: Revival treatment next?
