It's been a while since we had any news on this one, but we now have an update on David Cronenberg's latest project that's sure to make fans of the body-horror maestro very happy indeed.
Crimes of the Future is strongly rumoured to have its world premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, and one insider has already caught an early screening. According to World of Reel's Jordan Ruimy, the mysterious sci-fi horror flick is likely to cause a significant amount of “chaos and controversy.”
“The last 20 minutes are a very tough sit," he adds. "I expect walk-outs, fainting and real panic attacks (I almost had one myself!)”
The film is set "in a distant future where humans have evolved beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. In this setting, a performance artist named Saul Tenser embraces Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Removing those organs becomes a new kind of theater, one that earns a following, as well as the attention of the government."
It really doesn't get any more Cronenbergian than that!
Viggo Mortensen is set to play the lead (Tenser, we assume), re-teaming with Cronenberg after starring in A History of Violence, Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. He'll be joined by Kristen Stewart, Léa Seydoux, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar and Lihi Kornowski.
