Sony Pictures, with the help of its leading stars, has officially announced a Christmas 2025 release date for its highly anticipated Anaconda reboot, which may be titled The Anaconda. This marks a thrilling return for the franchise, blending horror and comedy to deliver a fresh take on the cult classic.
Headlining the reboot are fan-favorite actors Jack Black, known for his iconic roles in Kung Fu Panda 4, Tropic Thunder, and School of Rock, and Paul Rudd, celebrated for his performances in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and Avengers: Endgame. Joining them is rising star Daniela Melchior, whose credits include Fast X, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Suicide Squad. Additional casting for the film is still underway, promising an exciting ensemble.
Tom Gormican, acclaimed for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and That Awkward Moment, is set to direct the feature. Gormican also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Kevin Etten, his collaborator on The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The creative duo’s expertise in blending humor and action suggests a unique vision for the upcoming reboot.
In a short promotional video, Jack Black teased fans, saying, “There’s gonna be a big [expletive] snake, and it’s gonna rip,” while Paul Rudd humorously added, “You want to get scared? You want to laugh? You want to celebrate with your friends? Or maybe you’re alone and sad and have nobody, but just want to forget about that?” These statements hint at the film’s tone, leaning into horror-comedy rather than the adventure-horror roots of the original.
The original 1997 Anaconda became a cult classic despite mixed reviews, grossing over $136.8 million globally on a $45 million budget. The cast, including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, and Owen Wilson, delivered a memorable experience for fans of adventure-horror. The success of the first film spawned several sequels, including the theatrical release Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid in 2004, which grossed $71 million. The franchise later transitioned to television with titles like Anaconda 3: Offspring, Anacondas: Trail of Blood, and Lake Placid vs. Anaconda.
The Anaconda will be the franchise’s first theatrical release in over two decades, debuting in a competitive holiday season. Its December 25 release follows James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, both entering their second weekends. With its unique blend of horror and comedy, The Anaconda promises to stand out as counterprogramming, appealing to audiences looking for a fresh cinematic experience during the holidays.
The mix of nostalgia, a star-studded cast, and a new comedic twist makes The Anaconda a highly anticipated release. Fans of the franchise and newcomers alike can look forward to a thrilling and hilarious adventure this Christmas 2025.
