Crystal Lake has not been renewed yet, but showrunner Brad Caleb Kane already knows what he wants from a second season. Speaking with Bloody Disgusting, Kane laid out a wishlist that should please anyone who came to the Friday the 13th prequel for the kills.
Spoiler warning: this article discusses the ending of Crystal Lake Season 1.
More Sackhead Jason, More Carnage
The Peacock series is set nearly a decade before the original Friday the 13th, and its first season wrapped up its main mysteries while leaving room for more bloodshed from Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, and Jason. Kane has a clear idea of where things go next.
"If we're lucky enough to get a season two, I already sort of have a framework in my mind. I do know thematically what I want to touch on, which is a little bit different than part one," he said.
He was even more direct about the slasher side of things. "I do know that I want there to be a whole hell of a lot more of Sackhead Jason, I'll tell you that. I want there to be a whole lot more carnage."
Sackhead Jason is the version fans know from Friday the 13th Part 2, before the hockey mask became his signature look, so leaning into that era would give the show a chance to build toward the Jason of the films.
Famous Faces From the Franchise
Kane also teased that a second season could bring in more characters from the wider franchise, though he would not name names. "In terms of other characters that I want to touch on, there are, and there are people that we haven't necessarily seen in the first season, but people who might be very well known from the franchise that I do want to dig into," he said.
Some familiar faces are already in place. Crazy Ralph, played by Nick Cordileone, and Deputy Dorf, played by Cameron Scoggins, do not fully match their movie counterparts yet, but Kane said a second season would close that gap. He wants to dig into the eccentrics of the town, comparing the approach to Twin Peaks.
"In the movies, you can have a crazy Ralph just be the prophet of doom. He's there for a little comic relief; Dorf is there for just a little comic relief. But if we're doing a show called Crystal Lake, you want to delve into the eccentric characters in the town a little bit more," Kane explained.
He said he wanted to give the townsfolk distinctly early 1970s interests, from Rita, played by Joy Suprano, chasing meaning through the human potential movement, to Dorf throwing himself into the martial arts boom while trying to escape his father's shadow.
Chief Brooks Survives
Kane also cleared up one of the finale's open questions. "Because you don't see it at the end of season one, I will just say it flat out, Officer Brooks survives. Chief Brooks survives. He's okay," he said of the character played by William Catlett.
Better still for fans of the character, Kane sees Brooks as the center of the show going forward. "In terms of where we would take him in season two, he's our leading man," he said, comparing Catlett's role to the stoic heroes played by Sidney Poitier and Gary Cooper.
That does not mean Brooks will have an easy time. "I have ideas, but he would certainly be in danger again. But no, we're not looking to kill Chief Brooks," Kane said.
Waiting on Peacock
For now, all of this depends on Peacock ordering more episodes. The first season has already given fans plenty to argue about, from a controversial new origin for Jason Voorhees to the show's first look at a grown-up Jason. Kane's comments suggest a second season would push the prequel much closer to the masked killer horror fans know.
