The second season of Showtime's Yellowjackets concluded last night with a heartbreaking finale, and fans are still reeling from what will likely go down as one of the most shocking character deaths in TV history.
The episode was, unsurprisingly, full of twists and turns in both the present day and the 1996 wilderness timeline. In the latter, the big reveal comes when Nat (Sophie Thatcher), not Lottie (Courtney Eaton), is anointed as the group's "Antler Queen" after surviving the penultimate episode's attack by allowing poor Javi (Luciano Leroux) to die in her place when he fell through the ice.
Then, adult Nat (Juliette Lewis) is killed in the present timeline!
As the adult survivors return to their ritualistic ways after reuniting at Lottie’s (Simone Kessell) wellness community, Natalie ends up dying in a cruel twist of fate when she's stabbed by Misty's (Christina Ricci) lethal dose of phenobarbital. The needle was meant for Lottie's follower Lisa (Nicole Maines), who Natalie bonded with over the past few episodes and decided to act in a self-sacrificial attempt to save.
During an interview with THR, young Nat actress Sophie Thatcher was asked about her character's tragic journey.
"What’s so sad about her, especially out of all the characters, is that everyone has been battling their own demons, but Natalie has maybe had it the worst. And I think her surrendering and self-sacrificing was so sad, because there’s also so much bravery and a lot of admiration that I had for what she did. At first I read it as her giving up, but it’s so far from that because she’s already passed that threshold. She’s already done everything wrong that she can in life, that I think it’s the beginning of a new chapter for Lisa and the end of her chapter."
