BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Star Sarah Michelle Gellar On Why She Feels A Reboot Is A Bad Idea

Sarah Michelle Gellar sounded open to revisiting Buffy the Vampire Slayer a few years ago, but the actress now believes a full reboot or continuation simply wouldn't work...

There's been talk of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in some form or another for over a decade at this stage, but we recently learned that the "revival" featuring a Black lead from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scribe Monica Owusu-Breen had been put on pause.

Whether it, or some other incarnation of Buffy ever sees the light of day remains to be seen, but one person who has very little interest in getting involved with any new take on the fan-favorite character is Buffy Summers herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

"I'm not," said Gellar when asked if she'd be open to returning for a potential reboot during an interview with SFX. "I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn't need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story because there's the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: 'Every girl who has the power can have the power.' It's set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent."

Joss Whedon had been on board the previous project as an executive producer, which may have had something to do with the plug being pulled.

Even if a new Buffy show or movie does enter development at some point, Gellar sounds pretty certain that she wants nothing to do with it!

She's right, there's no need to reboot. The world is ample enough to tell more stories following new characters.

@1stDalek - agreed. Would just hope that they’d stay true to the original show with makeup and special effects and other elements to make it the same world. Not cheapen it or CGI the crap out of it. And it would be fun to bring back some old faces for cameos. Be cool to see Xander as a grizzled watcher who has to find his heart again. See Giles as a villain. Stuff like that. But with new slayers. If they did it well, and I mean really well not half asses ljke most of these things are done, they could attract the original cast back to lead roles eventually. Bring Buffy back as a mother figure or leader to the new cast.

They’d have to hire back some of the original writers, that understood the show and worked closelt with Whedon, since it’s a safe bet he’s out. Marti Noxon, Drew Goddard etc. They would do it justice.
