James Gunn and Peter Safran have officially announced the first chapter of their new DCU slate, which will be known as "Gods and Monsters." Several exciting movies and TV shows were revealed, but for horror hounds, the most intriguing project has to be a new Swamp Thing film.
Fans of the Earth Elemental were very disappointed when the dark, gruesome HBO Max series was cancelled, but the DC Studios co-heads have promised that the upcoming movie will be just as horror-focused.
“This is a much more horrific film, but we’ll still have Swamp Thing interact with the other characters,” Gunn said during the slate unveiling.
"We bring it up because it’s important to point out that in these stories, although they’re interconnected, they’re not all tonally the same," added Safran. "Each set of filmmakers bring their own aesthetic to these films, and the fun is seeing how these tonally different works mash up in the future."
Though this initial slate does seem mostly family-friendly, we know the studio is not opposed to releasing R-rated DC-based movies, so we'd say there's a good chance Swamp Thing will fall into that category.
No writers or directors are attached (as far as we know), but Logan helmer James Mangold did seemingly tease his interest in boarding the project with the following Tweet.
