The amazing reviews and strong word of mouth that propelled V/H/S forward back at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival are still paying rewards for the Brad Miska-created horror anthology series over twelve years later.
The plot centers around multiple disturbing VHS tapes discovered by unwary viewers and the videos' controlling effect over individuals who see the tapes. Bloody Disgusting founder Brad Miska (Kids vs. Aliens) created it from an original concept.
Each chapter contains a different set of directors and cast, with the anthology series usually operating as a stand-alone in nature, although related themes point to a single fictional nemesis, known as the Entity, as the source of all the evil that arises from watching the movies.
The sixth installment, V/H/S/85 debuted on Shudder and AMC+ last week and broke all kinds of records for the network. Now, talk is already turning to the next film in the found-footage horror series and it seems the franchise will be headed to space.
An official press statement was issued following the announcement of a seventh season at NYCC this past weekend.
"Jason Voorhees, Leprechaun, Pinhead, Dracula, even the Amityville Horror house ended up in space, so as we move into our own Part 7 it was only natural that we should too,” said producer Josh Goldbloom. “The sci-fi horror genre provides us an infinite playground of forbidden worlds and dangerous lifeforms, a formula which we’re confident will lead to the biggest, maddest, bloodiest V/H/S ever.”
Per the same press release, the next installment will, "feature five new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape, will release in 2024."
Head of AMC Networks’ Film Group Scott Shooman added, "The V/H/S franchise has been terrifying and entertaining audiences for over a decade now thanks to the work of some of the genre’s most gifted filmmakers. Following the massive success of V/H/S/85 and its previous installments on Shudder, it’s clear that the filmmaking team won’t be running out of unique ideas anytime soon. We’re thrilled that the franchise is going in a bold, new direction that will surprise fans and newcomers alike, and demonstrate the innovative capabilities of sci-fi within the world of V/H/S."
Stay tuned for more updates as the next crop of directors for the next installment will likely be announced in short order. Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone) headlined the crop of directors that helmed shorts for V/H/S/85.
