A live-action adaptation of popular survival horror video game Five Nights at Freddy's is in development at Blumhouse, with The Wind director Emma Tami on board to helm. She will also pen the script along with game creator Scott Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback.

“In meeting with Emma, I felt she had a great understanding of the franchise, and really felt that she could craft something that would please the fanbase and keep people on the edge of their seats,” Cawthon said in a statement via Variety.

There have been several previous attempts to get a FNAF movie off the ground, with Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Home Alone) attached to direct in 2018. An earlier version was in the works at New Line with Gil Kenan set to helm.

The first game launched back in 2014 for PC and consoles, and was set in a Chuck E. Cheese-like children’s restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where the animatronic creatures come to life and go on a murderous rampage after dark. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has been enlisted to create the sinister group of children’s mascots.

"The game places the player in the role of the night watchman, who must remain in their office and use a limited number of grainy security cameras feeds and electronic door controls to track the movements of the creatures. If the player survives five nights — and a subsequent bonus night — they effectively win the game (by getting fired)."

If you haven't played the games and want some idea of what to expect, check out 2021's Willy's Wonderland starring Nicolas Cage.

Production on Five Nights at Freddy's is expected to commence at some point next year.
