BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE Star Says Sequel Will Pay Homage To One Of The Original's Most Iconic Scenes

The original Beetlejuice movie is full of fan-favorite, iconic moments, but the scene that arguably stands out the most is a bonkers musical number set to Harry Belafonte's "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)."

The sequence sees recently deceased couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) possess a group of unwanted houseguests, including Catherine O'Hara's Delia Deetz, and force them to perform a rendition of the tune while dancing around the table. The attempt to scare off the intruders doesn't exactly have the desired effect, however.

During an appearance on the Let's Talk Off Camera podcast with Kelly Ripa, O'Hara said that the song will be utilized in Tim Burton's upcoming sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

"'Day-O' is in the movie. It was just very, just really loose and fun and lovely, and Michael Keaton was so happy to be there, and Jenna is so cool. Jenna Ortega is such a cool young woman... Winona [Ryder] looks exactly the same!"

O'Hara didn't provide any context for how the song will be used, so we're not sure if it'll be a full recreation or simply a little nod to the scene. Either way, we can't imagine it'll be the only callback to the first film.

Though we don't have official word just yet, the first trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been classified, and should be with us over the next week or so.

A new synopsis also found its way online recently, giving us a better idea of what to expect from the plot.

The brief story outline confirms a few things fans had already surmised from the various set photos, revealing that the mischievous Bio-Exorcist (Michael Keaton) will once again attempt to force Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) to marry him so he can return to the land of the living for good.

"After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to the small Vermont town of Winter River. Paranormal empath, Lydia Deetz, begins to see the lecherous demon Beetlejuice, who haunted her as a teenager. His plans to finally marry Lydia are given extra urgency when his dead wife comes to life and begins to stalk the Afterlife hunting for him. Meanwhile, Lydia’s teenage daughter embarks on a romance with a local teen."

Other new cast members include Monica Bellucci as Betelgeuse's wife, Willem Dafoe as an afterlife cop, and Justin Theroux in an undisclosed role.

Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar penned the script.

Beetlejuice 2 is set to release in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
