One of gaming's scariest monsters now has its own horror novel. Halo: Parasite's Wake, written by acclaimed horror author Tim Lebbon, is now available, and it drops a squad of disgraced soldiers into the moment the Flood breaks loose in the Halo universe.

The official Halo account marked the release yesterday (October 20th) with a look at the book's cover, fittingly signing off with a biohazard symbol.

The official Halo Waypoint announcement describes Parasite's Wake as a new horror novel, and it is connected to the events of the very first game, Halo: Combat Evolved.

The Monster Beneath The Ring

For readers who know Halo mainly as a military sci-fi shooter, the Flood is the reason the series has such a strong horror streak. It is a parasitic lifeform that infects living hosts, twists their bodies, and turns them into shambling soldiers for its own spread. Its arrival midway through the first game, when an ordinary mission into a dark facility goes horribly wrong, is still remembered as one of the most frightening turns in a shooter campaign.

Parasite's Wake returns to that nightmare. According to the official synopsis, as the war rages across the ring, "a far more terrible threat from deep within Halo's underworld is hellishly unleashed that transforms this conflict into a desperate battle of survival for UNSC and Covenant alike." Humans and aliens who were trying to kill each other suddenly have something much worse to worry about.

A Squad Nobody Trusts

The story is set in 2552. Reach has fallen to the alien Covenant, and the human ship Pillar of Autumn has fled to a vast, mysterious ringworld known as Halo. With human forces scattered across its surface, Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto is tasked with leading a group of crewmates back to the Autumn's crash site.

The problem is who he is leading. Every member of his squad is a survivor from the ship's brig, and the synopsis notes that "Desertion, drunk and disorderly, and murder are only a few of the charges that Mobuto's squad carries." A group of soldiers who may turn on each other, stranded in hostile territory with a monster closing in, is classic survival horror territory.

Mobuto is a familiar name for longtime fans. He first appeared as a minor character in William C. Dietz's 2003 novel Halo: The Flood, and Lebbon's book now puts him at the center of his own nightmare.

Why Tim Lebbon Is The Right Writer

Lebbon has spent his career writing horror and dark fantasy, and he has won several genre awards along the way. His novel The Silence, about a world overrun by blind creatures that hunt by sound, was adapted into a 2019 film. He has also written in the Alien universe with Out of the Shadows, so he is no stranger to stories about people trapped with a predator that wants to use them as hosts.

That experience makes him a natural fit for the Flood. The games have always been at their scariest in tight, dark spaces where the infection pours out of the walls, and a novel told from the point of view of ordinary Marines without the Master Chief's armor should make that fear even more personal.

Listen If You Dare

The book is published by Gallery Books, runs 400 pages, and is available in trade paperback for a list price of $19, as well as ebook and unabridged audiobook formats. The audiobook is narrated by Michael Crouch, Lisa Flanagan, Kevin R. Free, Joshua Riley, and Tim Dadabo, the voice of 343 Guilty Spark, the eerily cheerful caretaker of the ring in the games. The cover art was illustrated by Halo community artist Rythaze.

Is a full Flood horror novel enough to get you reading Halo fiction, or do you think the parasite works best in the games?
