Warner Bros. is said to be working on an It prequel series for the HBO Max streaming service which would delve into the backstory of the demonic (possibly alien) entity dubbed Pennywise by the Losers Club in Stephen King's novel and the recent movies.

Tentatively titled Welcome to Derry, the show is expected to "explore the origin story of Pennywise the Clown as well as the dawn of the 27-year curse that haunts the small Maine town." The Ankler broke the news, but don't seem to have too many details to go on for now. It's unknown whether any of the movies' cast will return, but it seems unlikely given the timeframe.

The site also notes that "a writer’s room “is being/has been convened for the project.”

King's original story establishes that Pennywise is a centuries-old creature who found its way to Earth before the dawn of man, so this series is going to have a lot of room to maneuver! If it's going to focus on the origin of the curse, though, chances are it'll be set around the time Derry was built.

What do you guys make of this news? Do you think It even needs a prequel? Drop us a comment down below (they all float down there).

I don't know! It always seems like WB resorts to doing backstory shows when their main IP's are waning in popularity. That is how we got Gotham and Pennyworth. I guess I need to see a trailer.

@Forthas - Totally agree and as I was writing my comment below I began to realize that I have enjoyed the other Stephen King expansion series that have come out. Castle Rock season 1 and 2 were pretty good, and so was Chaplewaite.

The more I think about it, the more willing I am to give this a shot.
It's a very very cautious and weary shot, but a shot nonetheless lol

Yeahhhhhh.... Look, I love It and Pennywise as a character, but do we really need an entire series dedicated to his backstory?

I really really dont think that sounds interesting at all. We've already gotten a time piece that provided back story for a backdrop of a king novel. It was pretty good. Definitely watchable, although I have to go back and rewatch it bc I forget a lot of what happened in Chaplewraithe? and Castle Rock season 1 and 2. I forget how its spelled. Either way, I dont think another Stephen King town expansion series is where its at.
Maybe.

Give us the Dark Tower series we've been asking for, if you want to do a series based off a Stephen King story.
