Bright light!
We haven't had any updates on this one for quite some time, but Variety has now debuted a first-look promo image for the upcoming HBO Max animated prequel series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.
The show, which hails from WB Animation and Amblin TV, will focus on 10-year-old Sam Wing (the store owner played by Keye Luke in the movies) and his relationship with a young Mogwai called Gizmo (you can see the furry little fella below).
Secrets of the Mogwai is not expected to debut on the steaming service until later in the summer, but it's set to have its world premiere during the Annecy Animation Festival on June 13.
Ming-Na Wen (Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D, The Mandalorian) will play Sam's mother Fong Wing, who is described as a doctor of Chinese medicine who is “resourceful, slyly funny and fiercely protective of her family.” BD Wong (Mr. Robot, Jurassic World) will provide the voice of her husband Hon, who is characterized as a “calm rock” that has “never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure.”
James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China) will play Grandpa, and Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) is on board as the villainous Riley Greene, "a power-hungry English industrialist and treasure hunter who wields black magic that is determined to stop at nothing in his pursuit of Gizmo and the mythical treasure of the Mogwai."
Gizmo will be voiced by A.J. LoCascio (Voltron: Legendary Defender).
The 10-episode season "reveals the story of how naïve 10-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins."
