Well Go USA has released a brand new 10th-anniversary trailer for Train to Busan, and it comes with the one detail horror fans have been waiting on: a firm theatrical date. The 2016 Korean zombie landmark rolls back into theaters across the U.S. and Canada on August 14th, remastered in 4K.
The trailer cuts together the outbreak that turns a routine father-daughter trip into a sprint for survival, the passengers barricaded car to car, and the wave of the infected pouring down the aisles at that unmistakable full-tilt speed. Well Go paired the footage with fresh key art.
If you've seen the film, the cut snaps you right back. For anyone who somehow hasn't, this is the cleanest it's ever looked!
A workaholic father boards the high-speed KTX to Seoul with his young daughter for her birthday. Somewhere behind them a viral outbreak is already tearing through South Korea, and one infected passenger slips aboard before the doors seal. What follows is a speeding train turned into a rolling kill box, safe cars and infected cars separated by nothing but a set of glass doors.
The Modern Zombie Benchmark
Ten years on, Train to Busan is still the film most modern zombie movies get measured against. It premiered at Cannes in 2016, went on to become one of the highest-grossing Korean releases of its era, and proved a sprinting-undead thriller could carry real emotional weight without ever tapping the brakes.
A LOT of American horror fans first met the film through a laptop screen and subtitles, so a proper 4K theatrical run is a chance to feel the claustrophobia the way it was built to play: loud, packed, and inescapable.
Here's a piece of trivia for the die-hards: director Yeon Sang-ho released an animated prequel the same year. Seoul Station traces the first ugly hours of the same outbreak through the streets of the capital, and it arrived in theaters just weeks after the live-action movie. The franchise later expanded with the 2020 standalone sequel Peninsula.
The cast reads even bigger now than it did in 2016. Gong Yoo, the desperate dad on that train, is the same actor who later turned up as the coin-flipping recruiter in Squid Game. Ma Dong-seok, billed as Don Lee in the West, went on to join the MCU in Eternals. A young Kim Su-an anchored the whole thing as the daughter, and Parasite standout Choi Woo-sik rounds out the passengers.
Yeon Sang-ho's Next Outbreak
Yeon has a new outbreak film, Colony (군체), due in theaters just weeks after the re-release. A tight window gives you the chance to revisit the movie that put him on the map and then see where his zombie instincts have gone a decade later.
Well Go USA is branding the anniversary run as a "Remastered & Revived" 4K presentation, its FIRST time in the format on a theater screen. Select showings pair the film with a filmed intro and a short Q&A from Yeon himself. Tickets and participating theaters are the next thing to watch for as August 14th creeps closer.
The real question is how you want to catch it. Is a 4K theatrical run of Train to Busan enough to pull you off the couch, or has it become comfort-horror you'd rather revisit at home? With Colony rolling in just weeks later, are you more curious about where Yeon takes the outbreak next?
