THE CROW Original Director Isn't A Fan Of Bill Skarsgård's Version Following Jared Leto/Joker Comparisons

Earlier this week, we finally got a first look at this June's remake of The Crow. Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell) directs the movie which is led by Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven and FKA Twigs as Shelly.

The response to Skarsgård's transformation into The Crow has been mixed, if not outright negative. Unflattering comparisons have been made to Jared Leto's Joker in 2016's Suicide Squad and many fans are questioning why Sanders made such a drastic change to the character's classic appearance.

Well, Alex Proyas - who directed the 1994 movie starring the late Brandon Lee - has chimed in and he's similarly unimpressed.

He shared a still from The Crow remake and captioned it with, "Eric Draven's having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks." In the comments section, he followed those remarks up with, "I guess he's supposed to be a bad mofo with all those tats and werewolves and skulls on his jacket."

The filmmaker even poked fun at Eric's drink of choice when he said, "Samuel Adams! Jesus! He could at least drink something more bad-ass."

Proyas has long been one of the reboot's biggest detractors and said several years ago that he believes doing so does Lee a disservice. "The Crow would not be a movie worth 'remaking' if it wasn’t for Brandon Lee," he said. "If it wasn’t for Brandon you may never have even heard of this poignant little underground comic. It is Brandon’s movie."

"I believe it is a special case where Hollywood should just let it remain a testament to a man’s immense talent and ultimate sacrifice - and not have others re-write that story or add to it. I know sequels were made, and TV shows, and what have you, but the notion of 'rebooting' this story, and the original character - a character Brandon gave life to at too high a cost – seems wrong to me."

The movie is fast approaching but with similar sentiments shared by fans, the odds are going to be stacked against it.

Soulmates Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The Crow is set to be released in theaters on June 7.
