Last year, we learned that, in addition to ChampDog Films' Cinderella’s Curse, another horror-tinged take on the classic Disney tale was in the works, and a first look at Cinderella's Revenge has now been released along with the movie's theaterical debut date..
Andy Edwards (Zombie Spring Breakers) directs Cinderella's Revenge, which has Species star Natasha Henstridge on board to play the Fairy Godmother. She'll be joined by Lauren Staerck (Trust) in the title role, with Stephanie Lodge, Beatrice Fletcher, Megan Purvis and Darrell Griggs in supporting parts.
Previously appearing in the likes of Curse of Jack Frost, Staerck has also featured in TV projects such as Trust, Bad Influencers and The P.A. Launching her career with her turn in the sci-fi thriller Species, Henstridge is also known for turns in films like The Whole Nine Yards, Ghosts of Mars and The Whole Ten Yards. Among her TV credits are Eli Stone, She Spies and Diggstown.
Edwards' first full feature as writer/director was the zombie-comedy, Ibiza Undead, which was released theatrically in the US under the title Zombie Spring Breakers. He also helmed Graphic Designs, and contributed to sections of horror anthologies Midnight Peepshow, Three's A Shroud, Blaze of Gory, and Grindsploitation.
In this much darker interpretation of the story, "Cinderella (Staerck)’s wicked stepsisters and stepmother push her too far, leading her to swap her glass slippers in pursuit of blood-soaked vengeance with the help of her Fairy Godmother (Henstridge)."
“Cinderella is the most famous fairy tale in the world,” said Sobini Films' Mark Amin. “We were able to develop a great horror script that is also a female empowerment story with global appeal.”
“I’m so excited for audiences to see this newly imagined horror version of Cinderella in theaters. The picture is scary and fun at the same time and horror fans will love it," added producer Mark L. Lester.
Aside from the brief logline, details are few and far between on this one, but it sounds like Cinderella is going to take a more active role in doling out justice to her Wicked Step Mother and the "ugly" sisters!
Iconic Events Releasing, which is primarily known for screening UFC pay-per-view events in movie theaters, is handling the movies big-screen release. The studio has also brought several indie horror titles to theaters, including 2022 slasher film Terrifier 2.
