It looks like Scream 6 might the first instalment of the iconic horror franchise not to feature lead character Sidney Prescott.
Though no direct quotes from the actress have been shared online, several sites are reporting that Neve Campbell has been telling those in attendance at Monsterpalooza that she won't be reprising the role of Sidney Prescott for the currently in-development sequel.
Sidney had a small, but still important part to play in Scream (2022), returning to her cursed hometown after Dewey's (David Arquette) death in order to help a new group of survivors defeat the latest incarnation(s) of the masked series killer known as Ghostface. Scream 6's official synopsis reads: “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter,” so it probably wouldn't make much sense for Sidney or Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) to be involved, anyway.
Still, if accurate, this news is certain to disappoint fans of the slasher movie series.
Melissa Barrera (Sam), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy), Mason Gooding (Chad), and Jenna Ortega (Tara) will return, with Scream 4's Hayden Panettiere set to reprise the role of Kirby. Dermot Mulroney recently became the latest cast member to sign on. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will also be back behind the camera.
Scream 6 is set to slice its way into theaters on March 31, 2023.
It's now been confirmed that Campbell won't be back, and the actress has released the following statement.
“As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.” “It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
