The trailer for Searchlight's Nightbitch was released last week, and following the movie's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the first round of reviews are being shared online.
Despite an overall negative response to the first footage, most critics feel that the movie is much better than its trailer suggested (it currently sits at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes), with star Amy Adams coming in for universal praise for her fearless, committed performance as a woman who becomes convinced that she's changing into a dog.
Is she actually undergoing this hair-raising transformation, or is it all in her heard? It sounds like the movie is going to keep us guessing in that front, but you should get a slightly better idea of what to expect by checking out some of these reviews and reactions.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? director Marielle Heller takes the helm.
According to the official synopsis, Nightbitch tells the story of "a woman thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine."
“Rachel Yoder’s book took my breath away. I haven’t felt this way about [a] book since I read The Diary of a Teenage Girl many years ago,” said Heller in a recent interview. “Rachel’s darkly hilarious tale of motherhood and rage made me feel seen. And adapting it with Amy Adams in mind has been the thing that has kept me going through the pandemic. I am so thrilled to be bringing this movie to life with wonderful partners in Anne Carey, Annapurna Pictures, and Searchlight. It is a dream come true.”
