We first heard that a sequel to Night of the Living Dead was being shopped around back in October, and Deadline is now reporting that Amazon’s MGM division is in final negotiations to acquire worldwide rights to the project.
Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) will direct for Village Roadshow Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, Westbrook, Origin Story and the late George A. Romero’s Sanibel Films. The Walking Dead‘s LaToya Morgan penned the script.
“The original version of Night of the Living Dead is still so resonant to this day,” said Jusu. “Every era has the zombie that it needs and right now, zombies reflect the ways that humans treat each other and show us who is truly the monster.”
Romero's 1968 classic is still considered one of the best, and most influential horror films of all time. Of course, the legendary filmmaker would go on to make several sequels himself - including the arguably even better Dawn of the Dead.
Plot details for this new movie are still under wraps, but from what we can gather, it will be more of a direct follow-up to the original, possibly even spinning out from the tragic final scene which saw sole survivor, Ben (Duane Jones), gunned down by a group of trigger-happy red necks.
No release or production start dates just yet, but the film is expected to debut in theaters.
