GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE Is Officially Getting A Sequel, Sony Pictures Confirms At CinemaCon

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was the sequel fans of the franchise had been hoping for, but Sony Pictures isn't ending the story there. At CinemaCon last night, it was confirmed that another movie is on the way.

During a presentation at CinemaCon yesterday evening, Sony Pictures confirmed that a Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has officially been greenlit. No details beyond that were revealed, so it's unclear if director Jason Reitman will return. However, we expect to see him at the helm of this next movie, especially as he talked a lot last year about how Afterlife "sets the table" for future stories.

While the original Ghostbusters cast did make a cameo appearance, we'd imagine this next movie moving on entirely from them to focus on the new, younger cast. There's always a chance one or two of them gets a supporting role, of course, but this latest movie benefited from using them sparingly.

Reitman's movie was heavy on fan service, though, so time will tell what happens next.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife starred Carrie Coon as Callie, Mckenna Grace as Phoebe, Finn Wolfhard as Trevor, and Paul Rudd as Mr. Grooberson. As noted, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts reprised their iconic roles as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, Dana Barrett, and Janine Melnitz, respectively.

Sony Pictures didn't announce a release date or title for this sequel, and common sense says the movie is probably still in the very early stages of development.

"With a 5* performance from the insanely talented Mckenna Grace," we concluded in our review last year, "Ghostbusters: Afterlife proves to be the perfect mix of new and old, delivering a nostalgia-filled, joyous return to form for the franchise that ends the trilogy in style."

Hopefully, we'll have more to share with you soon. Stay tuned for updates!
